Must read

Sometimes it’s hard to separate work and home, but for actors, that separation can be the key to their sanity.

In the latest roundtable discussion from The Hollywood Reporter, some of the world’s biggest drama actresses discussed how important the distinction can be, especially when they’re working with such heavy material.

The conversation prompted Nicole Kidman to open up about the time after a rough day on the set of Big Little Lies the cause her to lash out when she arrived home, throwing a rock through the front door.

The Aussie actress went on to explain that she obviously had a lot of emotions pent up from working on Little Big Lies, saying that the rock she thre, “broke the whole thing.”

“I said to Alexander [Skarsgard] and Jean-Marc [Vallée], ‘I threw a rock through the window,’ and they were like, ‘Whoa …’ I said, ‘I was kind of p–sed off’.

“But there’s a way in which we operate where the show must go on, and so you just keep going – you show up and you do it and do it and do it and do it. And a lot of times, it’s six months of 12-14-hour days and there really isn’t the time to go, ‘I need to take care of myself’.”

The other actresses in the discussion agreed with Kidman, all explaining that they try and divide their heavier work up with lighter comedies.

“After Expats, I went and did a comedy because I went crazy with my own psychology,” continued Kidman. “I was like, ‘This is unhealthy’.

“And it’s something that I think we need to talk about as actors — protecting your body so that you can live for as long as you are given on this earth. Because it’s very tough on the psyche.”
