A large, ferocious blaze engulfing a car wrecking yard is expected to burn throughout the night in Sydney’s south-west.

The fire has been sending large plumes of black smoke into the sky on Fitzpatrick Street in Revesby from 2.10pm today.

More than 80 firefighters are fighting the blaze, which has been categorised as an 8th alarm emergency.

Firefighters said the flames have been stopped from spreading to adjoining properties but still burn at the site.

A number of vehicles stacked on top of each other at the yard is making it hard for crews to get into the fire.

“The situation is stable but the blaze is expected to burn for a number of hours due to the difficult access,” Fire and Rescue NSW said.

No injuries have been reported and all workers have been accounted for.

HAZMAT teams are also on site monitoring air quality as well as Environmental Protection Agency crews to minimise chemicals entering the storm water system.

Peak hour traffic in the area is also building up, with one westbound lane closed for emergency services vehicles.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area.

Nearby residents are also advised to keep their doors and windows closed as the fire burns throughout the night.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
