Bridesmaid’s frustration over ‘unfair’ cost of bachelorette party

Must read

Bachelorette parties are becoming more luxurious and inevitably expensive.

Spare a thought for this bridesmaid who was left fuming after she was forced to fork out $650 on a bachelorette party.

The 23-year-old woman explained how her male best friend was getting married and he wanted her to be in the bridal party so she was asked to be one of the bridesmaids for his wife-to-be.

She has already spent $100 on her dress and will have to cover between $1500 to $2000 on flights and accommodation for herself and her husband for the wedding, which is taking place next month.

On top of the expenses, she’s helping the bride with DIY décor.

The woman explained how she was then added to a secret group chat with the other bridesmaids, without the bride.

“I have no idea who any of these people are,” she said.

“I’m also the least close to the bride in the group… Myself and the bride are great friends but we aren’t super close.”

The bridesmaids in the group chat started a document together and created a sign-up list so each person can choose what they wanted to be in charge of getting for the bachelorette party.

“I signed up for the custom shirts, custom cowboy hats, and a lot of other party décor,” said the bridesmaid.

“A week AFTER we signed up, it was decided by two girls that you have to cover the cost of whatever you chose to get, which is b***s*** because some girls are bringing cups and plates whilst others are spending around $200.

“I’m spending $650.”

Unable to cover the cost on her own, the bridesmaid decided to screenshot the cost of the shirts which came to a total $300 and send it to the group — asking everyone to transfer her $30 for their own shirts.

The woman said that whilst one of the bridesmaid’s paid her shirt, the rest refused to cough up the money.

“One girl paid. The next girl told me her charcuterie board was $130. Another told me I should be glad this isn’t a destination event — but it is for me,” she said.

“The rest didn’t respond.”

The bridesmaid said she didn’t want to start any drama — but now she’s thinking about dropping out of the bridal party as she cannot afford to cover the expenses for the bachelorette party.

“The bride and I have a good relationship, but I don’t know what telling her about this would do,” she said.

“I am considering the $300 cost of the shirts, a present for the bride and attending the wedding normally, so no more money, time or effort is wasted… but then again, I don’t know if I want to go at all,” she said.

In a follow-up, the woman confirmed she had told the groom, who’s her best friend, and he was furious about the cost of the bachelorette party.

“He said that it’s b***s*** and that I shouldn’t do it. We’re about to call when he gets home to see how we can deal with this in the best way possible but he’s being supportive about it,” she said.

It’s unclear what happened next with the bachelorette party.

The woman’s post received many comments and people were quick to side with the woman.

“The situation seems disorganised more than intentionally unfair, if you want to drop out, drop out,” said one.

“I would have dipped out just over the travel expenses, I’m not spending $2000 on anyone else’s wedding,” added another.

“It’s a shame when weddings get too expensive and you just can’t afford to make the trip,” said a third.

While another suggested: “Just drop out of the bachelorette, not the wedding. Call the bride and groom, tell them the bachelorette, with travel and cost, is too much for you, but you are still excited to be a part of their wedding.”
