Banjo then Bart for Berkshire

Must read

The Bart Cummings, a golden-ticket race for the Melbourne Cup, is the long-range goal for impressive stayer Berkshire Breeze.

The Ciaron Maher-trained import has won his past two starts in Australia and bolted up by nearly five lengths in the 2520-metre RDAV Sally Francis Plate at Flemington last Saturday in the latest of them.

That event was a heat of the Banjo Patterson Series, with the final to be run on July 6, before the Maher team sets their sights on the spring.

“He was very good,” reflected Maher’s Cranbourne-based assistant Jack Turnbull.

“He put the writing on the wall, won well and ran a good figure at Cranbourne over 2000m. His best form was 2400m-plus in England and he showed that on Saturday.

“He’ll head towards the final in a month over 2600m and then plot a path towards The Bart Cummings.”

The G3 Bart Cummings is due to be run on Turnbull Stakes Day at Flemington on October 5, a month before the Melbourne Cup and has been won by Maher in three of the past four years.

Berkshire Breeze is at $71 in Sportsbet’s market for the Melbourne Cup.
